I made a decision to drop out from promotion pipeline in 2021, without securing my next job. It has been 3 months since then, and it’s kind of scary to see the figures of my deposit account is decreasing. Let me be clear.

I believe that I am doing the right decision for my career!

Still, that scary feeling was crawling on my mind yesterday. So I decide to write down the reasons so that I could assure/remind myself in the future.

Special thanks to Devin Justesen who wrote “10 Sure Signs You’re Making the Right Decisions” which boosted my confidence literally last night. Check it out if you’re questioning your decision now. You might find it helpful as I do.

Reasons to Change

  • Pick up skills that will put me in a position to choose 10 years from now
  • Select the environment that has the same beliefs as I do
  • Pursue a role that I want to be from within

How Long Is the Transition Period

  • It will take me at least 12 months, which is in Jan 2023

What Are My Goals in 2022

  • Work as web backend developer starting with JavaScript and Node.js
  • By end of August 2022, I will create a portfolio demonstrating capability of setting up API, creating shopping cart and deploying solution on Heroku
  • By end of 2022, I will officially start a new career as developer

What Are My Goals for 2023 ~ 2025

  • To pursue opportunities in Singapore, Australia, Thailand, Norway or Canada
  • To lift others who might want to do the same as I did

What about 10 Years from Now

  • Earn CS Master of Science from University of Oslo, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and University of Bergen (why Norway? well, the tuition is free for international student)
  • Start a side business to devote myself

It is so exciting! I will definitely come back to this article from time to time to assure myself that I am marching toward the life goal I want!

I enjoy the positive mind flow when writing code to solve a problem. This is my journey to become a software developer, though now working as a product owner
